Green Capitalism, Political Ecology, and Environmental Justice.
Jesús Alejandro García
I am a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at UC Berkeley, and a graduate student affiliate at the Center for Ethnographic Research in the Institute for the Study of Societal Issues, UC Berkeley. I hold an M.A. in Philosophy and a B.A. in Political Science with a minor in Economics from the Universidad de Los Andes in Colombia.
My work sits at the intersection of the uneven geographies of green capitalism, the political ecology of water, and environmental and climate justice. My dissertation analyzes the histories, dynamics, and struggles to make and remake the riverine landscape of the Upper Magdalena River, Colombia, and its political implications for peasant and fisherfolk communities. I ask how green capital’s attempts to stabilize, disrupt, or rework land-water interfaces shape and are shaped by peasants' and fisherfolk's longstanding struggles against dispossession. Native to the UMR region, I use engaged ethnographic methods to understand and contribute to the long-standing struggles for agrarian, environmental, and climate justice in the face of mounting pressure from hydropower, conservation, and REDD projects in the UMR.
My research has been funded by the Fulbright Program, the Conference of Latin American Geographers, the Climate Equity and Environmental Justice Roundtable, and the Berkeley Human Rights Center, among many others.
My teaching spans topics in environmental social science, with courses including “Critical Environmental Justice,” “Gender and the Environment,” and “Sociology and Political Ecology of agrifood systems.” My teaching philosophy is grounded in critical and engaged pedagogies, viewing learning as a critical, collaborative, and transformative process. I encourage students to see their education as a creative tool for shaping the world they want to live in.
I have lived in various parts of Europe and the Americas. I enjoy meditation, collecting pebbles along rivers, and studying maths with my daughter.
